You may have recently heard in the media reports of hacking attempts with the use of ‘Ransomware’. We thought it necessary to bring you up to speed on the risks with these recent attacks and what you need to be aware of moving forward. This is a very real threat and it is extremely important to manage the risks involved and implement the necessary contingencies to mitigate the potential threat.

The threat mainly attacks remote access protocols used by many organisations to provide remote access to their systems to their staff and business partners. Vulnerabilities within these systems are exploited and the hacker gains access to the system and cripples all of the data within the system and most of the related components.

We have spent quite an extensive amount of time researching further into reported attacks of this nature from both the media and our own experience. We have at this stage only confirmed cases of this threat attacking systems running the ‘Server 2003′ Server Family and potentially ‘Windows XP’ workstations. We consider these systems as High Risk. Whilst we have not had any reports of the attacks hitting any ‘Server 2008′ or above systems, they are not out of reach.

There are a few elements of your systems that you need to ensure are fully functional:

Daily Backups which are regularly taken offsite

Up to date antivirus software packages

Microsoft Security Patches are regularly updated

The use of complex passwords not easily hacked, replicated or guessed.

Alongside the above items it is highly recommended that all remote access facilities are locked down as much as practical to ensure that entry points are limited. Implementing such systems as VPN connectivity can provide a much more secure connection point whilst allowing the same level of functionality as currently being utilised. Another threat minimization system is to implement a 24/7 monitoring facility for your PC’s & server which automate many of the above tasks for you helping to add the peace of mind. Please talk to myself or any member of our team for more information on our monitored service agreements.

ONGC utilises current social media technologies as an information dissemination tool for our clients. Our Facebook page, found at: (https://www.facebook.com/ongcsystems) provides immediate and relevant technology updates to our clients. If you or a key member of your staff could ‘Like’ the ONGC page in order to receive these immediate updates.

We are here to assist you always and should you have any concerns or simply want to ‘beef up security’, give us a call. We will be making contact over the coming weeks with any of our customers that we believe are high risk to implement the required plans. If you would like any further information with respect to this report or are concerned that you may be at risk, please don’t hesitate to contact our office on (07) 5594 0099 and we can discuss further.

From my team to yours we wish you a safe and enjoyable Christmas break and a prosperous new year.

Kind Regards,
Damo, Steve & the Entire ONGC team.
