What Is The Fraser Island Clean Up?
As the largest sand island, Fraser Island’s 75-mile long beach attracts its fair share of tourists each year. While visitors are always welcomed, it does mean that an annual clean up is required to preserve the island and protect the precious ocean life.
Since 2001, Four Wheel Drive Queensland has been on a quest to keep Fraser Island in good condition through arranging an annual cleaning event. Four Wheel Drive Queensland is an association for those with a passion for four-wheel drives and includes a community of strong, supportive and like-minded individuals. All members are encouraged to regularly give back to the environment they love so much and continue to explore during their off-roading adventures.
The event is scheduled over a weekend and attracts hundreds of volunteers, including Four Wheel Drive Queensland affiliated clubs and their members. Locals and tourist are also invited to support the cause and lend a helping hand – the more volunteers, the better! The Fraser Island Clean Up receives no government funding. It relies on the kindness of their sponsors and volunteers to keep the event going, so we are super proud to be able to say that a member of the ONGC Systems team is one of those valued supporters!
The Excellent Results
This year, Alec was one of 754 volunteers to take part in the 2019 Fraser Island Clean Up. Over just one weekend, the team cleaned an astonishing 125km of beach land, successfully removing 7,059kg of waste! This works towards dramatically reducing ocean litter, helping to maintain the safety of island birds, marine mammals and sea turtles.
We couldn’t be prouder of Alec’s efforts and are excited to see the fantastic statistics for next years clean up – keep up the excellent work, Alec!

“Every Year 4wd Queensland Hosts the Fraser Island Cleanup over a long weekend. Myself and my 4wd club take part in this and clean up our allocated section of Beach for the weekend. We normally find a fair bit of rubbish each year washed up from storms and left by campers on the Island, This year just my 4wd Club was able to fill 3 utes with bags of rubbish from just a 3 Km section of beach.”
